Uddalaka Aruni

By bhargavi

Once there lived a sage named Dhaumya muni. There are many disciples with utmost devotion for this sage. One such disciple is ARUNI. Aruni is very much dedicated to his guru and follows whatever his guru order him.

One fine day, since it was raining heavily the sage, Dhaumya Muni asked his sishya Aruni to inspect the water flowing through the paddy field. Aruni obeyed his guru’s order and went to the field.

To his dismay, the rain water has ruptured the field’s path area and started ruining the whole field. Aruni made all his efforts to regulate the flowing water. But ALAS! All his efforts were in vain.

He prayed the Lord Almighty and his Guru and laid himself on the ground obstructing the water flow into the field.  Aruni spent his whole day and night in the field and thus prevented the water flowing in. And finally the water  began to ebb.

Meanwhile the sage and the other disciples came in search of Aruni to the field.  The sage was spell bound on seeing Aruni’s dedication and sincerity.

The pleased sage, Dhaumya Muni gave Aruni the title, “Uddalaka”.

Later Aruni became a renowned scholar as “Uddalaka Aruni” for his profound vedic works.
